At CES 2026 (January 7, 2026), Roborock unveiled the Saros Rover — the first consumer robot vacuum that can climb stairs. It does this with a wheel-leg architecture: articulated legs with integrated wheels that let the robot raise itself and lever up a step at a time.

How wheel-leg climbing actually works

Every robot vacuum sold today treats a single step as a wall: cliff sensors see a drop-off and turn the robot around. The Saros Rover’s approach replaces fixed wheels with articulated legs that have wheels in their hubs. To climb, the robot plants a leg on the step edge, lifts its body, levers up, and repeats — essentially doing slow, controlled step-ups on four limbs, then rolling normally on flat ground.

What the CES demos showed, and what they didn’t:

That gap between “works on a stage” and “works in a house with golden retriever socks on the third step” is where every robotics demo lives. It’s the right question to keep open, not cynicism.

The questions that decide whether it’s real

When review units ship, these are the tests that matter — in order:

  1. Reliability over hundreds of climbs, not one demo. A mechanism that succeeds 99 times out of 100 will eventually fail on stair 12 of a 3-storey home.
  2. Failure mode. Where does a $1,500-class robot end up if a climb fails halfway? Falling down a staircase is a category-killing failure mode, so the safety engineering matters as much as the climbing.
  3. Wear and noise. Legs are joints, motors, and gears — more moving parts than wheels. How loud is a climb, and what does the mechanism sound like after a year?
  4. Battery math. Climbing costs energy. Does a “whole-home” run still finish on one charge in a 3-storey house?
  5. Dock logistics. A dock per floor defeats the point. Does one dock on the ground floor work with climbs in the middle of a run?

Why this matters for the category

Every robot vacuum sold today cleans exactly one floor. Multi-floor homes either buy two robots or carry the robot between floors. A reliable stair-climber breaks that limit — it’s the first genuine category redefinition since self-emptying docks.

It also explains Roborock’s current marketing push: the company is leaning hard into “mechanical innovation” messaging this cycle.

There’s a second, quieter effect: price pressure on everything else. Flagships from 2023–2024 are being cleared at steep discounts right now — the S8 Pro Ultra, a $1,600 robot at launch, has been listed around $400 in 2026 (price as of August 31, 2026; check current price — see our S8 Pro Ultra review). If your stairs aren’t the deciding factor, the “boring” robots have never been better value.
